First Grade Information
Welcome to Mrs. Amanda's first grade! We are going to work hard and learn a lot. Please use this page for information about things that we do in my classroom. I'm looking forward to a great year!
Homework Choice Boards
- Homework choice boards will be sent home each month. They are due at the end of the month.
- Word Sorts are cut out and sent home on Monday. They are words/picture on white paper. Tests are on Fridays.
- Reading Pocket-Students will bring home books of their choice based on their reading level. Students need to read a book each night. The students will read each book 3 times in order to build fluency.(This does not have to be every night). Parents need to initial the log. Students need to be responsible for turning in books and trading for new ones.
Word Sorts
- Students receive a new word sort each Monday. These sorts are from the program Words Their Way. The students are grouped based on what sort they need.
- Students will have a word sort or picture sort that needs to be completed each night.
- Students practice their sort each morning as soon as they unpack.
- Our schedule is:
- Monday- Blind Sort- cut out new sort and complete
- Tuesday- Time it Tuesday. Students complete the sort one time for me to check. They mix it up and then try to beat a timer.
- Wednesday-Write it Wednesday. Students complete the sort one time for me to check. They get a paper and practice spelling the words. These papers come home.
- Thursday- Glue down day. Students complete their sort one final time. They glue it down on a paper. These papers come home so students can study for their test on Friday.
- Friday-Sort tests. I give students a spelling test based on the words they have in their sort. If they get a 100, they are a SuperStar! If students miss more than 2 words, they will repeat the sort the next week.
- Our schedule is:
- Please have your child practice spelling these words for the tests on Friday. These sorts are a very important step in your child learning to read and write.
Reading Folder
- Reading with and to your child is the BEST way for a child to learn. It is important to read at least one book from the reading pocket each night. Please note that they are not required to read each book every night.
- Books are choice based on students reading level.
- Remind your child to turn in their book after they have read it 3 times. I make this the students responsibility!
- Reading logs are due at the end of the month!
